Attacked by bees on the long path

TOday marks the beginning of my long path through the attempt: an attempt that I hope to fail.

From the ground, the style of hiking, the views, the altitude and access to the city, the long path is nothing like what I have experienced before. It is important for me to demonstrate myself, it is not that I can physically complete the path, but that I can have fun Completing a path outside my comfort zone.

Battered feet, messy back

Unfortunately, I am starting the path with some persistent problems, a back that I threw while lifting boxes last week and a motivation concern. With how difficult I have heard that things get further northI think the fastest way to return home will be to lose motivation with this trail.

However, the approximation path was easy, and I made its way through Pine Cobble Trail before joining the trail of the Apalaches, just south of the Massachusetts/Vermont border.

From there, it was a brief excursion to the Vermont border, where I could support the south of the terminal and celebrate having existed in a space where Tara Dower was standing a few days before. I am ready to make this path almost 10 times slower than her.

Autumn colors

Today, I have the option of sleeping at the Seth Warner shelter (5 miles beyond the terminal) or the Congdon shelter (10 miles beyond the term). It was 2 pm when I finally left the city, so I don’t have too many hours of daylight.

While walking, I am increasingly in love with plants along the path. I intentionally walked this path when I thought the maximum colors would be shining, and seems to have chosen the correct dates. The orange leaves, not yet brown, cover the forest floor, while the bright red, green and yellow leaves decorate the trees that cover the path.

While I contain a corner, I see a hastily written note on toilet paper that reads «bees in bump ahead to the right.» I think the note is fun, take a photo, immediately forget the warning and keep walking.

Bees attack !!

Seconds later, I feel stab in my Achilles. Then, another in my neck, combined with a strong buzz filling the air around me. I turn off without thinking, running along the path as quickly as I can with 20 pounds of equipment on my back.

Soon, I see my friends Fudge and Chicken, and I shouted «I’m being persecuted by bees!» They laugh and come back to look, just to realize that I am not joking. We run the next minutes, we just stop when we no longer listen to the incessant buzz.

I stop to assess the damage: 6 bees bites are scattered by my legs, including the first in my Achilles. Fortunately, the second bee was the only one that put my neck.

It comes out, but resolves to take a Benadryl if things begin to swell.

Night hiking

While the sun sets, I make the decision to continue pushing towards the Cogdon shelter. With me just getting 12 hours or so up to date, I should wait time walking after dusk.

I like a quite walk at night. I like to feel that the air cools when the sun sets slowly, seeing that the large yellow leaves that border the path become almost incandescent in the fixed sun, and observe the forest turning that boring indigo tone as the world becomes monochromatic in the final moments of environmental light.

For a few minutes, as my eyes begin to tense, I postpone when I took out my lighthouse, enjoy the other sensations of the forest: the leaves crepit under my feet with each step and the smell of the plants that had spent the day baking in the sun.

In the dark field, each whisper is a bear and each unidentified sound is a mountain lion (I don’t even know if Vermont has mountain lions). I walk for myself a mile remaining to the shelter and I find myself analyzing the forest with each step, as if I could see more than one, a foggy foot beyond the brightness of my lighthouse.

First night on the path

Once in the shelter, frankly, I am too tired to socialize, and I can find a place for the jeans camp a little away from the noise.

I dehydrated and cooked my own food for my first two dinners, and I decided that I am interested in eating a good dinner. If as this favorite food tonight, what will I do to encourage a funk?

Enroll the dice in a cream cheese/enforcement/macarrones with meat cecina. It is the food that sounded the worst, but I am pleasantly surprised by the final result.

Of all the children I have started, today it was the most pleasant. Against all the chances, I ended up the day feeling strong, capable and not with too much pain in my feet. The back pain has been overcome by Bee Pain, which I know will heal soon.

Maybe it is the clear climate, the bright leaves or the light package, but I am starting to let me have a little hope.

Today I heard «Feeling well» from Muse, and sounded like the beginning of something new and exciting.
