As always, I am sad to lose the shelter breakfast. But, as always, the holiness of my dream on a complete zero day? Important. Originally, I was going to take a slack today, and then take off tomorrow. But, my body really didn’t want to move. In addition, tomorrow would be another Sunday … and another day without a library. So, despite what makes sense with a «rest schedule», I decided to take slow today. I was awake … Ish when Jill arrived to start changing the sheets, and she asked me if I wanted to get to the city soon, to which I was ready!
She left me in the laundry, where I put on my clothes, and I went to see the hiding place of Rangelley, the local cafeteria. It was full! Rangelley manages to be a great tourist destination throughout the year, full of skiing in winter and enjoymenters of the summer. Something that I have been thinking in general is how the different cities of trails have had in recent weeks, given the adjacent to Boston that the mountains are going through now. I have gone from the cities rich in tourists in Georgia to the cities that suffer from the decline of industry in Pennsylvania, and now these specific cities of tourism. I know he will change again as I deepened in Maine. Even so, it is a thing that I appreciate this walk to give me: a perspective of more from the United States.
In the hiding place, I met Roundup and Chili Crisp, two sobos that began to address some of the highest peaks in southern Maine. It is always interesting to see the energy levels that sobos still have, while at this point I am only limbing. I think in the future, if I did this again, I would try to find ways to eat better and make sure to capture much more before on a walk, to maintain some level of nutrition.
We returned a little on his next walks, and then I returned to the laundry to dry my clothes, before returning, the laundry bag in my hand, to get some food! Interestingly, I just finished in the other cafeteria of the city, classical provisions, and ended up asking for a salmon + egg sandwich, in addition to a breakfast burrito. The boy has to eat! I placed these on my way to the library.
Rangelley’s library was quite pleasant, with some desks available for use. Being surrounded by books, I always remember how much strange curl up with a physical book in bed at night, with my cat. Soon! … soon.
The library closed at 2, and so I made my pilgrimage to Rangelley Adventure Co. for my final logistics in the city. While it is not a hiking attributor, the owners made sure they have enough for any travel trip to reach the largest attire of Gorham or Monson. I took some meals and quickly tried some mole shoes … just to see if they would work. And yes, they still don’t. Topo manufactures «European foot» shoes, which are too narrow to me. Or, many people.
Jill picked me up, and I was surprised to see Father Tom in the truck too! However, maybe it shouldn’t be. Father Tom is walking through the ETA, and every Sunday they have ensured to reach the city to attend an adoration service. We were both transferred to the IGA, where I took some food for the slack and tomorrow’s sandwiches for tonight, while he grabbed his complete refueling. Then we spend time in the shelter to rest and relax.
In the shelter, I returned to Sakura and Bamboo, the hikers I met in Mahosuc Arm! I have to learn a little more about their stories. In the 90s, Sakura had a host family in East Tennessee, and learned about the trail of the Apalaches through them and walking parts of herself. Since then, she always dreamed of doing it. And the bamboo was on the trip, why not?
Father Tom and I talked a bit, where I could learn a little more about his history. He was a firefighter in New York (who, yes, went on the way to us talking about September 11), and when he learned of AT, he also learned about Tec. And, to cite it: «Well, I knew that I like to challenge myself, and when I heard about this, I knew I could have regretted not trying to get until I could have done it.» Support for him! His walk does not end at the border, he is also looking to go to Canada. We both had moments when, sitting there, eating ice cream, it was unreal that we are still on the same trips since the beginning of the year. Time passes differently here.
Ken returned from his obligations, and came to tell us Hello. Jill took us to Oquossoc Grocery, a local groceries/delicatessen that makes very good hot food for collection. Both Father Tom and I have a reluctant and fried potatoes, before returning to the shelter. I took some time to call some friends, before we all force to nod. I am excited to make my third and most likely the final slackpack tomorrow! Feel a little better now.
