Bayer Leverkusen has appointed former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand as his new coach on a two-year contract after the resignation of Erik ten Hag, the Bundesliga club said Monday.
Hjulmand, 53, accompanied Denmark to the semi-final of Euro 2020, where it lost to England in extra time, and stepped after the 2-0 defeat by Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2024, ending a spell of four years.
The Dane rather co-05 in the Bundesliga season 2014-15 and has now returned to German football to take over the second place of last season.
«I have always considered Bayer Leverkusen as a very well -run, well -structured and very ambitious club. This impression has been confirmed in recent days,» said Hjulmand.
«It is an honor to be entrusted to such a team. The task motivates me enormously, and after excellent successes in the past, I would like to form the future of Bayer Leverkusen together with both proven and exciting new players.»
Ten Hag was fired after two Bundesliga matches. The Dutchman, who had been out of management since his resignation by Manchester United in October, replaced Xabi Alonso in May, after the Spaniard left to take over at Real Madrid.

Alonso had led Leverkusen to a double in the 2023-24 campaign, where it lifted its first Bundesliga title and his second German cup without losing a match.
Hjulmand now has the task of pursuing the successful spell of Alonso, a challenge that made the more difficult because of the departure of the season of various important players, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka.
After their outputs, Leverkusen spent around 170 million euros ($ 199.80 million) to rebuild his team, including Ibrahim Maza, Malik Tillman, Jarell Quansah, Loic Bade, Mark Flekken.
«A new assembled and developing team such as ours needs a clear direction and will benefit from the transparent, communicative and empathic style of Kasper,» said Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro.
Leverkusen resumes his league campaign on Friday at home against Eintracht Frankfurt before he visits Copenhagen on September 18 in their Champions League opener.
