Belgium is still the favorite for the top group G, but the country no longer participates in tournaments with the same certainty that surrounded its golden generation.
The team still has star power. De Bruyne can control a game, Courtois remains elite when fit, Lukaku is the country’s record scorer and Doku gives the attack the kind of pace that can open up a tight match.
But this Belgium also balances age, injury history and transition. Lukaku’s fitness is a major talking point, while De Bruyne, Courtois and Witsel are no longer leading the team into a new cycle. Garcia has younger options with Onana, De Cuyper, Debast, De Ketelaere and Fernandez-Pardo, but the question is whether the blend can function quickly in tournament football.
The opener against Egypt is the most important match of the group for Belgium. If you win it can control the section before facing Iran and New Zealand. If we fail to win, the pressure will change quickly, especially as Iran is likely to make the second match difficult.
Belgium should qualify, and first place remains the realistic goal. The deeper question is whether it can still look like a team that can cause problems beyond the group stage.
Player to watch out for: Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne is still changing the Belgian ceiling. His passing range, set-piece ability and ability to control tempo remain central to the attacking structure. If Belgium wants to manage the matches and avoid chaos, he will be the player who will set the rhythm.
Manager: Rudi García
Garcia has inherited a side between the eras. His job is not only to get Belgium through the group, but also to get the older core and younger players to fit into one structure. Managing Lukaku’s fitness and protecting an aging spine will be central to the Belgian tournament.
