Benfica announced on Friday that it has provisionally suspended five supporters for allegedly making racist comments during the Champions League loss to Real Madrid this month qaz3.
The February 17 defeat to Madrid was marred by alleged racist abuse directed at the Spanish club’s Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.
Vinicius scored the winner before the alleged abuse led to the match being stopped for around ten minutes.
Madrid reached the last 16 on Wednesday with a 3-1 aggregate success over the Portuguese team.
“Benfica announces that it has suspended five members and revoked their red passes after initiating a disciplinary procedure that could lead to the maximum penalty provided for in the statutes, namely expulsion,” the club said.
“Benfica reaffirms that it will not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to take firm action when there is behavior that undermines the values of the club, sport and society,” the two-time European Cup winner added.
