Sun, Surf and Arenisca: Day 8 on the Portugal Fishermen Path
Carrapateira hiking to Vila do Bispo
Distance: 16 km
Path section: PortaPateira → Vila do Bispo
Conditions: 10/10. Pure Sun Without wind. Zero rain. Coastal magic from beginning to end.
Coastal magic in full flowering. The Carrapateira section to Vila Do Bispo could still be my favorite: flowers, cliffs and sea views that stopped me dry.
1. Starting the path of fishermen from Carrapateira: slow mornings and agave fields
After a rest night in our cozy apartment together in Carrapateira, we had the slowest and most dreamy morning. We started with some local coffee coffee and did not leave the house until almost 11 in the morning, which was felt as a pleasure. We wandered around the city to supply ourselves in the snacks of the paths: breakfast cakes, lunch ingredients and even some Brazilian artisanal chocolate!
When we leave, we pass Imponent Agavas Fields«Seriously, these things were massive.» We noticed that their high flower stems looked a bit like asparagus … and after a quick Google, we discover that they are actually in the same family of plants. Nature is full of surprises.
BY THE WAY – If you missed my blog yesterday on the path of the fishermen, I would recommend checking it!

Supplied for the path on this small mini market in PortaPateira. Cakes and chocolate made a sweet beginning of the day.

These agaves were giants. And fun fact, those high stems? They really are from the same family of plants as asparagus!
Elevation, finally!
For the first time on this path, he really felt like an adequate walk. Today it had a significantly more than the first days, which have been mainly flat. We walked in the valleys, the steep cliffs and navigate through more rocky terrain that gave the whole day a more adventurous sensation.
It was not too strenuous, very accessible and rewarding, but it was satisfactory to feel that my legs worked a little more. The views made it worth it.

Awown come on, finally a real elevation on the path of fishermen! The climbs were worth views like this.
Coastal cliffs, beaches and complete circle moments
The landscape today was unreal! Even after a week of walking on the path of fishermen, I was impressed by the varied landscape. We continue the coast most of the day, often stopping to soak up everything. The cliffs were red sandstone, shining against bright green vegetation and splashed with wild flowers. Next, the beaches seemed to paint them: soft sand, turquoise waves and long sections where surfers and swimmers danced with the ocean.
At one point, we spent a beach that stopped me dry. I realized that I had been here before, dry years ago, in a yoga and surf retirement in sagres. It was the exact beach where I learned to surf. A complete circle that I did not see coming.

A full circle moment, going through the beach where I learned to surf seven years ago. This coast continues to improve.

Going up the path and looking at the life of the beach below: Survey waves that mount waves, swimming splashing in the sea. Pure coastal joy.
A cave of cliff and wild percaves with a swan neck
Later in the day, we discovered a small cave hidden in the cliffs. Orion, Sandra and Oliver convinced me to explore it, and although my cloister was launched, I followed it, with a little encouragement.
Inside, the waves crashed under us, and for my absolute delight, I saw the wild swan perclabes that clung to the rocks. You perceive, as they are known here in Portugal. These small strange delights are not only delicious but also dangerous to harvest, but grow in cracks with waves, and only a handful of people are trained (and brave enough) to collect them. Seeing them in nature gave me a new appreciation for the dish.

We saw these wild on the road today. The perceptions (percebs of swan) are a Portuguese delicacy, and seeing them in nature gave me a new appreciation for this unique dish.
A package that I really love
Margin Note: I’ve been affectionate Carrying a lighter load this week. My Gossamer Gear G4-20 has been the dream package for a trip like this: comfortable overcoming, the fair amount of space and refreshingly simple. I have felt much more free and light along the way, especially with all the elevation changes today. I strongly recommend anyone who seeks to walk with less volume and more easily.

Lighter package = happier hiker. The Gossamer Gear G4-20 has been a total victory for this trip: simple, comfortable and exactly what I needed.
Arrival to Vila Do Bispo
We arrived at our Airbnb in Vila do Bispo around 6 PM Sandra and Oliver they were just outside the town, so it was only Orion and I for dinner. We grab hamburgers in the city and devour them absolutely. I have officially entered the complete hunger mode. I packed a bag of french fries and disappeared in about 10 minutes.
I can feel the change: my body adjusts, yearns more fuel and is established in the rhythm of the path.

He arrived in Vila Do Bispo, a small and nice town where hunger for hikers kicked hard. Burgers, french fries and complete happiness.

Trace appetite with all its strength. Hamburgers + French fries + beer … and yes, I was still hungry later. 😅
Vibrates today: stillness, sun and simplicity
This day had everything: insignificant cliffs, vibrant colors, a small physical challenge, good company and wild beauty. Each section of the path has its own personality, and today feels warm and soft, as a deep exhalation.
We moved slowly, we stopped often and completely soaked at the time.
Every day here you feel different. The landscapes change a lot: red sand dunes, crazy rock formations, open beaches. And today? Today was all I could have expected. Sun, sea air, slow joy and a full heart.

Great smiles, complete hearts, salty air. This day had everything: Sunshine, Stillness and Sweet and Slow Joy of Alegr
3 things I will remember from day 8:
-
Seeing wild barnacle in their natural habitat (and how intense it would be to reap them).
-
That full circle moment on Surf Beach where I learned to surf for the first time.
-
Real elevation change! Walking down, walking, he finally felt like a path with some bite.
See you tomorrow for day 9 on the path of the fishermen, from Vila do Bispo to Cabo de São Vicente!
