Bayern Munich needs just two goals in St. Pauli on Saturday to break the 54-year-old goals record for a Bundesliga season.
Vincent Kompany’s runaway leader has already scored 100 goals in the Bundesliga this season – just one goal shy of the best result in the history of the German top flight – and there are still six games of 34 to play.
The previous record was set in 1971-72 by a barnstorming Bayern team featuring club legends Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeness.
The fact that Bayern has already brought up his Bundesliga century shows his dominance this season.
At the current pace, Bayern are on course for 121 goals, which would be a better figure than the record in the Premier League or La Liga, both of which have 38-match seasons.
Even the all-time top five European league record of 125, achieved by Torino in a 40-match Serie A season in 1947-48, would be within reach.
If Bayern may have to accomplish this feat without Harry Kane, who is chasing a league record of his own.
With 31 goals in 26 Bundesliga appearances, Kane is 10 behind Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41 in 2020/21.

Kane missed the England internationals in March with an ankle injury but returned on Tuesday to score what proved to be the winner in Bayern’s 2-1 Champions League win against Real Madrid.
However, the England captain did not look 100 percent and could rest easy against St. Pauli with Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg in mind.
One player who will almost certainly start is Michael Olise, who is also on his way to a record season.
Olise, who assisted Kane’s goal against Real, has scored 18 goals in the Bundesliga so far this season, three shy of Thomas Mueller’s record in the 2019/20 season.
