Bundesliga 2025-26: Bayern Munich draw 1-1 at Leverkusen after 2 red cards, Dortmund close

Bayern Munich came from behind to end the match with nine players in a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, allowing Borussia Dortmund to close to within nine points of the Bundesliga leaders.

Luis Díaz, who scored the equalizer after Aleix Garcia’s opener, was sent off for a second yellow card in the 84th minute. Nicolas Jackson received a red card in the 42nd minute.

Leverkusen took the lead in the sixth minute after Montrell Culbreath stole the ball from Diaz and passed it to Patrik Schick, who put Garcia on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder shot in with a deflected shot.

The hosts defended well to contain Bayern’s attempts to get back, and the frustration showed when Jackson was sent off before half-time for a late challenge on Martin Terrier.

Bayern played with third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich because Manuel Neuer has a calf problem and reserve Jonas Urbig suffered a concussion in the 6-1 win over Atalanta in the Champions League in midweek. Ulreich denied Schick’s effort in a one-on-one situation on the hour mark, just before Harry Kane came on.

Back from a calf injury, Kane played for the first time since February 28 after scoring eight goals in his past four Bundesliga games. He shot the ball into an empty net in the 62nd minute, but the ball was disallowed because he blocked the goalkeeper’s ball with a hand in the build-up.

The Colombia winger was later shown a second yellow card for diving and Bayern were down to nine men with six minutes to play. The hosts could not take the victory despite pushing hard until the end, as Jonas Hofmann’s goal was disallowed deep into stoppage time.

Bayern have not won against Leverkusen in the league since October 2021.

Borussia Dortmund were in complete control throughout the first half and Augsburg were fortunate to trail by just one goal at half-time. Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock in the 13th minute and had several more chances, hitting the woodwork twice. Luca Reggiani made it 2-0 in the 59th minute.

Hoffenheim, looking to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since the 2018/19 season, remained third – 17 points behind Bayern – after a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Wolfsburg. Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Heidenheim 1-0 thanks to a goal from Arnaud Kalimuendo.
