French defender Dayot Upamecano has extended his contract with Bayern Munich by four years until 2030, the defending champions announced on Friday.
Upamecano, 27, moved to Munich from RB Leipzig in 2021 and made 180 appearances for Bayern, winning three Bundesliga titles.
«I am very happy to stay at Bayern and continue playing in this team. We have a great team and a great coach. We have big goals together,» Upamecano said in a statement.
«I give everything for my teammates, in every training session. I want to keep a clean sheet in every match and win as many titles as possible with Bayern.»
Despite facing heavy criticism early in his Bayern career as injuries and a lack of confidence affected his form, Upamecano had developed into a regular in the French national team by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, starting for Les Bleus in the final defeat to Argentina.
Under Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, a former centre-back who joined the club in 2024, Upamecano’s form has soared.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said Upamecano had «developed here at Bayern into a real world-class defender and leader».

With Upamecano’s contract set to expire this summer, the announcement ended a long-running saga over the defender’s future amid links with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League clubs.
He and his agent had negotiated the new deal hard and German tabloid Bild reported weeks ago that Upamecano had missed a club-imposed deadline to provide answers about his future.
In January, Bayern powerbroker Uli Hoeness criticized Upamecano’s agent for insisting on making a decision in an interview with Kicker magazine, saying he was «shocked by this behavior».
Still, Bayern relented on its position and handed Upamecano both a substantial sign-on bonus and a release clause, valid from 2027.
This season, Bayern are six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and have qualified directly for the last 16 of the Champions League.
