Bayer Leverkusen had a lead of two goals slip away with 3-3 on 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday on Saturday and denied new coach Erik ten Hag’s first competition win.
Leverkusen was 3-1 ahead and a man after the Panenka penalty of Patrik Schick Halfway through the second half, with Bremen’s Niklas Stark showed a second yellow card for the mistake that led to the spot kick.
But Leverkusen left Bremen back in the match when goalkeeper Mark Flekken improved from his area and rated a long ball wrong, making Isaac Schmidt the easiest finishes.
Bremen continued to attack and grabbed a point in the fourth minute of the stop time, Karim Coulibaly volleying in after the ball bounced from the bar.
Coulibaly, 18, is Bremen’s youngest goal scorer ever in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen was also 2-0 in the first half after Schick scored an open fifth minute and debutant Malik Tillman added another to the 35th minute.
Bremen won a controversial punishment, converted by Romano Schmidt just before half-time, before the second half drama.

The result explains some early pressure on Ten Hag, who tries to merge a team full of new recruits, while breathing new life into his own reputation after a bad end of his Stint in Manchester United.
The draw held Leverkusen’s remarkable road hard, with the club unbeaten on the road in the competition since May 2023.
Doan sends Frankfurt to win
Elsewhere, the new Eintracht Frankfurt-Vleugel player Ritsu Doan scored a brace and added an assist when his side rode a 3-1 victory at Hoffenheim.
Japan wing player Doan, who arrived from Freiburg in the summer, yielded the opener of Frankfurt in the 17th minute with an excellent curly effort from far outside the box.
Doan doubled 10 minutes later, tapped in a Jean-Matteo Bahoya pass during the break, before he put an excellent pass for Can Uzun to score the third of Frankfurt.
Stuttgart defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0 at home thanks to a late header of CHEM ANDRES, only a few hours after the departure of striker Nick Woltemade to Newcastle was officially made.
The German cup holder was slow but took the three points when Andres came in at 79 minutes played after some bad marking through the Gladbach defense.
