Struggling Mainz has hired former Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer to fill the vacant head coach position, the club announced on Sunday.
Mainz fired coach Bo Henriksen on Wednesday. The club is last in the Bundesliga, with only one win from thirteen games.
Fischer, 59, has been unemployed since he resigned as Union boss in November 2023. At Union, Fischer oversaw a stunning rise from the second division to the Champions League.
Union improved consistently during Fischer’s time at the club, finishing 11th in his debut campaign at the top level, before finishing seventh, fifth and fourth.
Fourth place meant a shock qualification for Europe’s top competition and matches against Real Madrid and Napoli.
The Berliners took a dive in Fischer’s final season, losing 13 of 14 games before the Swiss coach agreed to leave the club.
“I am looking forward to the challenge and am confident that as a team we will turn things around,” Fischer said in a statement.
