But what will I wear?

A little too heavy

That Grinch scene where he is deciding what to use has been trying to decide what to bring on the Colorado path during the past year …

Background history: I walked part of Colorado Trail in 2021 with a package that was too heavy. As, more than 50 pounds. In case you do not imagine, walk through the mountain with so much weight on your back … it hurts. I had not misunderstood, I had been backing with almost the same configuration for several years. It was fine for the casual backpack, but it is not ideal if I wanted to cover larger miles with a more pronounced elevation.

This is how I used to see my package.

So I made some equipment updates! No, I’m not a light ultra. I am too comfort to do that, but I tried to find the best happy medium for weight against comfort. I updated the big four (tent, pad, sleeping bag and package), as well as some smaller articles. Actually, I almost updated everything. Finally, I shaved around 18-20 pounds from the general weight of my package before this walk. You can see my Cob List here for details, but the four big ones I finished are below:

  • Durlon X -one Pro 1
  • Gear Gear’s elite sleep pad
  • Zenbivy 10 degrees mats system (I’m a cold SleEper is fine)
  • Kuiu Women’s 4000 package

This is much better!

Test and error

When I told you that «mistakes were made» it could be my nickname, at least came with some humor. I have been updating equipment, testing different products and on preparation walks during the last year to prepare for the CT. Many experiences went well, but where things could go wrong, they definitely did.

My friend Jamie and I tried to make a walk in May in the Richland Creek Wilderness area in Arkansas. It was … an adventure. First, we got lost in our vehicles arriving at the beginning of the path. Yay communication errors in an area without cell service. We managed to meet, gather our team and think we were on the way.

Well, it turns out that we only managed to walk one mile and half in the wrong direction. That beat me the great photo presented at the top of this page, but it definitely delayed us from our plan. In the midst of that incorrect turn, my water bladder leaked throughout the inside of my bag. Free air. When we finally arrive at the good Address, the following more than 4 miles led Jamie to take ampoules on all feet, and I walk along the nearby road to get hooked to our car. I returned to get it so that I no longer had to destroy your feet.

I also tried two jolt walk in New Mexico this year. For the first trip, I got sick terribly along the way. I was committed to continue and kept trying, but I ended up returning without any mile. The second trip was almost plan. I was in the desert of Pecos, and that I underestimated the beauty of that place. I have to try the final configuration of all my new team, and my pack felt very good.

He felt good during the first 10 miles, anyway. I spent the next 10 miles walking on the fall and the bushwhacking through the foliage of the waist. That path had returned to nature. It was for a very day and added some scratches and bruises to my legs. I guess this is not really a mistake, apart from the fact that I chose the «incorrect» trail. Fortunately, the trip in general was beautiful and finally I got my shake!

Deeply in the desert of Pecos

Fortunately, everything came with a little plenty of time. The next stop is Waterton Canyon!
