Carabao Cup: Why doesn’t Donnarumma play in the quarter-final between Man City and Brentford?

Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will start on the bench for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford at the Etihad, team boss Pep Guardiola announced on Wednesday.

Guardiola confirmed that James Trafford will start in goal in place of regular shot-stopper Donnarumma, the brand-new FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of 2025, amid a packed seven-match December schedule.

“James is going to play, and all the players who haven’t played recently are going to play, and some from the Academy, because three days after that we have West Ham (in a Premier League match on Saturday),” Guardiola told the media ahead of the match.

“I’m not saying it’s not the priority to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, but normally when we do, it’s when we have the whole squad, no injuries, and we can rotate.»
