Cas rejects the profession of Mexican clubs to restore promotional breakdown this season

An appeal lodged by six Mexican Second Division clubs that were looking for the immediate restoration of promotion and relegation in the Top Liga MX, was rejected on Thursday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The appeal, which was submitted in May, had challenged the decision of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) to continue with the suspension of promotion and relegation for the 2025-26 season.

The suspension was originally introduced in the 2019-20020 season during the COVID-19 Pandemie for a period of six seasons.

«After investigating the evidence, the CAS panel concluded that the FMF had always decided to suspend the system until the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season, that the clubs were made clear when the decision was made,» Cas said in a statement.

The panel noted that the FMF decision was in line with the original agreement in April 2020.

The clubs that appealed believed that the FMF and some League MX clubs insist to make the suspension permanent, making a closed competition model comparable to Major League Soccer in the United States.

Ten clubs had become a member of the profession, but four – Atlas, Cimarrones de Sonora, Alebrijes de Oaxaca and Jaiba Brava – withdrew later.

As a result, six clubs – Athletic La Paz, Atletico Morelia, Cancun, Zacatecas Miners, Venados and Leones Negros of the Udeg – left behind to continue with the profession.
