CDT Joy: First zero day in Augusta

Day 14: 21.2 miles.

The highlight: Chinese wall, Sun River

I fell asleep with the sounds of the flies buzzing in my lobby and the crickets squeezing. During the night there were again the deer in the herbs near my store, which made the night of sleeping the night.

The minimum during the night was in the 50s and today it was one of the first nights that the bag was too warm. I woke up sweating, then ventilated my bag and cools me, then woke up sweating again.

I woke up around 6 in the morning and decided to go in my bag for a short time. The crust in my knee opened again while changing myself to the excursion clothes and needed a few minutes to restart the day in a positive way. I packed and was grateful for putting socks and dry shoes.

A few miles of the day, I descended on the Chinese wall, a rock formation with a resemblance to the upper layer of the large cannon. It was beautiful in the morning light. Then I went to a water source on the path to filter water. The mosquitoes were so bad that I decided to filter the water while walking, which I had never needed to do before.

Throughout the day I met many more hikers when the alternative stained bear arch joined the red line of CDT and everyone approached the city. I met at least five people who plan to arrive tomorrow morning like me and wait for a problem in Augusta. I am craving a hamburger and a bed.

I took a break for lunch for a stream and lying me on the floor with my feet in a fallen tree for half an hour of nap. When I woke up and moved again, the pain I felt on my knees went completely.

The land in the afternoon was cruise and I got camping as soon as possible that I have all this section. I established the camp near the Sun River and in the last dinner from my food bag: a homemade chipotle meal and a rice meal with spicy sauce. I could escape the mosquitoes on this site, which was a welcome change, but there were still many flies that opened to greet.

The highlight: Benchmark Wilderness Ranch and Stay in Augusta

This morning I put my alarm for the 5 am to make sure to reach the reference path at 10 am for a transport service to Augusta. The path was quite wide and picturesque and it was noted that this section of the path was much more traveled.

I arrived on the path just after 9 am and took some time to relax in the shadow before the ferry arrived. We were 7 of us to hikers at the beginning of the path when Robert arrived and we all opened the way in his truck. Approximately 2 miles later, made a stop at Benchmark Wilderness Ranch to be able to collect my resupply package and picked up 2 additional hikers. It was a journey crowded with all of us on the dirt road of almost 1 hour.

The impulse was incredible to see the change in the landscape from forests and mountains in plains and rolling hills while we headed towards the city. Today’s clouds looked like a strait outside a set of films and were super swollen and contrasted with the yellow hills. Closer to the city and start seeing cattle farms, houses and then our first pavement in a week.

They left us in the post office and called my family now that I had cell service. I had asked my mother in my Inreach if I could book a hotel in my name, since I knew that many of us wanted to stay and this was the only place in the city. On other paths, I have generally had at least one day during my time to catch the cell service and make the phone call myself, but there has been no service this section.

The rooms were full, but she was so kind to book a camp for me at night. After chatting, I went to the camp to establish the camp and then linked to several other hikers for lunch in the attached room to the motel.

After lunch, I went down the street to the General Store to take antibiotic ointment and found a knife -size pocket knife to replace my lost multiple. I also took a 1.5 -liter aloe vera drink to stay hydrated while in the city.

Once back in the camp, I shower and wash my clothes. The shower water was hot and there was no timer, so I spent time soaking the dirt of the week. Some of us, hikers, participate to buy shampoo and laundry soap to use it. During the laundry I began to load my electronics and talked with other hikers. Once the laundry ended, it was time to eat again and headed to the lazy B.

The restaurant had a special that if you ask for 2 large pizzas, you get a free large cheese pizza, so some of us enter the treatment. I plan to pack the leftovers for a gift my first day on the road.

It started to rain while we had dinner and returned to my store in the rain. I grabbed my laundry battery banks where they were loading and in my tent I made a final packing of food for tomorrow. Robert would go the next morning to leave the hikers back to the road between 9 and 10 am tomorrow, so I planned to wake myself naturally, have breakfast and do some final electronics before reaching the path.

Day 16: 0 miles.

The highlights: Estancia Restful in Augusta

In the middle of the night I woke up with a headache and took some medicine to return to sleep. The rain had stopped, but you could listen to music flying from the bar on the street and the sounds of the cars that passed at night. At 6 am I woke up with a headache and took more medications.

I really didn’t want to walk with another headache as I did on the way the previous week. I looked online the availability of the hotel and decided to book a room for tonight. This would give me the time for my head to feel better and reduce the stress I felt to hurry to do all my tasks.

It reminds me that the space between push too strong and not push enough is where I need to be. My outer knees hurt in the morning and I want to do more things in the city to rest and recover than to push bigger miles in the mountains. I went to breakfast around 8:30 am for some French toast, I packed my grass shop, then hid in the laundry to load electronics and play on my phone.

I had some of my leftover pizza for lunch and went to the general store again for drinks, a desert and wandering.

Augusta General Store

The Augusta Motel is the only accommodation in the city and is a unique place of small town. It is a motel, a park of houses Rodantes, and has a room, casino and restaurant. It was a great place for a relaxing zero.

I registered at my hotel at 2pm and relaxed a little. I took my second shower in two days and I had a towel to give my body and my feet a good exfoliant. Around 5 pm I went to dinner at Buckhorn. He had a chicken sandwich and a jalapeño tater. After dinner we went to the living room next to the hotel and asked the waitress to make me a cocktail inspired by Montana. She brought back a Huckleberry vodka mule and was very tasty. I chatted with other hikers and once my drink ended, I said goodbye before falling asleep early.

FAVORITES THIS SECTION:

Favorite food: M&M ice cream sandwiches from the General store of Augusta. I went to the store 3 times different and I got this sandwich as a gift on my walk back to the motel.

Favorite Team: My light load towel. I use it to clean the condensation of my single -wall tent store and to clean my legs at night. It is very absorbent and light, and I am impressed by its durability since I have used it since day 1, rinseing it with soap in the city to clean.

Favorite phone application: Farout application. Since he left the Glacier National Park, I have had this application open and reviewed at least once and time.

Favorite entertainment media: Podcast of ologies.
