Kerala Blasters was on the verge of closure, the CEO of the Indian Super League (ISL) club revealed on Wednesday.
“We have seriously considered that option,” Abhik Chatterjee said at a news conference. «Some ISL clubs have the backing of big institutions, but others are owned by individuals. Kerala Blasters found themselves in a situation where it was difficult to move forward, and this led to the discussion of closing the club.»
He said that 80 percent of the clubs playing in the ISL have changed their practices to survive. “None of the teams are spending a lot of money on the players and there are no big transfers happening in Indian football at the moment,” he said. “The clubs spend money to run the league, not just the AIFF.”
On the reasons why Blasters did not stop operations, he said: «The club means a lot to the people. And so many players would have lost the opportunity to play.»
