Bayern Munich recorded sixteen wins from sixteen games this season, underlining its reputation as an early Champions League favorite. They defeated holders Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 as Luis Diaz scored two goals and was shown a red card on Tuesday.
The Colombian winger struck twice before being sent off on the stroke of half-time for a violent tackle on Achraf Hakimi.
PSG, who reduced the deficit through Joao Neves, dominated possession after the break but failed to make it fully count and slipped to their first defeat in the competition since last season’s quarter-final against Aston Villa.
The result kept Bayern at the top of the 36-team league with a maximum of 12 points, with PSG in third place, three points behind and with more injury concerns after Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele were replaced early.
Dembele made his first Champions League start of the season, but his evening was short-lived as the French striker was replaced by Lee Kang-in after 25 minutes.
PSG, who had defeated Bayern 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup in July, came out flying with their trademark high pressure but were left cold in the fourth minute when Diaz struck home after Lucas Chevalier had parried Michael Olise’s effort.

Dembele thought he had leveled midway through the half but had his goal disallowed for offside as PSG pressed but looked unusually vulnerable at the back.
Moments later, Manuel Neuer made a spectacular save for Bradley Barcola, who had raced onto Fabian Ruiz’s pinpoint long ball.
Bayern stayed one step ahead and after Serge Gnabry hit the post, Diaz pounced on a sleepy Marquinhos to steal the ball and score a second home in the 32nd minute.
Diaz’s evening ended abruptly just before half-time when he was shown a straight red card for a brutal lunge on Hakimi, who limped off in tears with a suspected ankle injury.
Long spells of possession followed for PSG in the second half, but the hosts missed out on an advantage until the 74th minute, when substitute Neves reduced the deficit with a spectacular scissor kick from Lee’s cross.
Neves came close to equalizing with a header a few minutes later as PSG continued to pile on the pressure, but despite the hosts’ late attack, Bayern held on.
PSV leaves it too late to share points with Olympiacos
PSV Eindhoven substitute Ricardo Pepi scored in stoppage time to deny Olympiakos a first win in this season’s Champions League as their match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Pepi held back a rebound from a free kick three minutes into stoppage time, after Olympiacos had taken the lead from the 17th minute through Gelson Martins.
The former Portugal international whipped in a powerful shot from the right after a quick kick at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis from goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis to give Olympiacos an early lead.
But it could not last and the draw leaves the Greek club with two points from four games, while PSV now has five.
