Newcastle United secured a third successive Champions League victory with Dan Burn and Joelinton both on target in a 2-0 defeat to injury-ravaged Athletic Club on Wednesday.
England defender Burn scored a majestic header after eleven minutes, and Joelinton doubled the Premier League club’s lead shortly after the restart with another header, as Newcastle moved into the top eight of the table with nine points.
Despite a host of injuries that left eight first-team players missing, including Spanish international Nico Williams, Athletic caused plenty of problems for Eddie Howe’s side.
The closest came a thunderous shot against the post from Adama Boiro shortly after Burn’s opener, while Unai Gomez was also close to equalizing.

Athletic have just three points from their first four games and will need to improve if they do not want to miss the chance of reaching the knockout stages.
Inter Milan fights past Kairat Almaty
Last year’s finalists Inter Milan had to struggle on Wednesday before beating Kairat Almaty 2-1 at San Siro, with the Italians maintaining their perfect record in this season’s Champions League despite scoring their first goal of the competition.
After four games, Inter is on twelve points, next to Bayern Munich and Arsenal, while Kairat remains on one point.
After a poor first period from Inter, Lautaro Martinez put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, but the San Siro were stunned ten minutes after the break when Ofri Arad equalized with a header from a corner.
Carlos Augusto put Inter back ahead in the 67th minute, and although the home side could not find another goal to eliminate the brave Kazakhs, the slow performance was still rewarded with the three points.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick came off the bench to grab the only goal of the match in a 1-0 away win over Benfica, which condemned Jose Mourinho’s side to a fourth straight defeat in the group stages of this season’s Champions League.
