Champions League — PSG drew against Bilbao; Leverkusen and Dortmund also drop points

Paris Saint-Germain played out its first goalless draw of the season at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday but remained in the driver’s seat for direct qualification for the round of 16 of the Champions League after a series of fine saves from home goalkeeper Unai Simon denied the French champions a win.

Luis Enrique’s side had the best of chances after coming under pressure in the first half, but Simon produced a number of brilliant saves and Ousmane Dembele’s absence was once again felt up front by the visiting side.

The result leaves PSG third in the 36-team league with 13 points from six games, while Athletic are 28th with five points, two points clear of the play-off spots.

PSG then travel to Sporting and Athletic visit Atalanta.

Dortmund plays a 2-2 draw

Julian Brandt scored two goals for Borussia Dortmund, but his team had to settle for a point as visiting Bodo/Glimt came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The draw leaves Dortmund in 10th place with 11 points from six games, while Bodo/Glimt remain winless and in 32nd place with three draws from six games.

Brandt put Dortmund ahead after a poor pass from Haitam Aleesami, but the latter made amends when he equalized just before half-time.

The home team put on plenty of pressure after the break and were rewarded early when Brandt scored his second with a tap-in from a rebound, before Jens Petter Hauge restored parity for the visitor fifteen minutes before the end.

Grimaldo saves a point for Newcastle United

Bayer Leverkusen’s Alex Grimaldo scored an 88th-minute goal to salvage a 2-2 draw for the hosts against Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Newcastle thought it had done enough to get back into the top eight after going 2-1 up from a goal down, before Spain international Grimaldo burst into the penalty area to level with two minutes to play.

The hosts went in front when Robert Andrich headed in at the far post, and the ball bounced off Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for an own goal in the 13th minute.

Newcastle equalized with an Anthony Gordon penalty in the 51st, after Leverkusen keeper Mark Fleken stomped on the ball, allowing Nick Woltemade to grab the ball before being brought down.

Gordon then turned provider in the 74th, driving a cross into the penalty area for Lewis Miley to head home his first Champions League goal before Grimaldo grabbed the late equalizer.

Newcastle are twelfth with ten points, while Leverkusen drops to twentieth with nine. The best eight teams qualify directly for the knockout phase. Teams finishing ninth through 24th will enter a play-off round to reach the last 16.
