City Football Group (CFG) has exited its stake in the ownership of Mumbai City FC in another major blow to Indian football, the Indian Super League (ISL) club announced on Friday.
«Mumbai City FC can confirm that City Football Group Limited (CFG) has divested its equity stake in the club. The founders will take full control of the organization,» the club said in an official statement.
“Since 2019, CFG and Mumbai City FC have reached new heights, winning two ISL League Winners’ Shields and two ISL Cup titles, strengthening the club’s football operations and making meaningful contributions to the growth of football in India.
“CFG has made this decision following an extensive commercial review and in light of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of the ISL. This move reflects CFG’s disciplined and strategic approach – keeping its focus on areas where it can have the greatest impact in the long term.

The Master Rights Agreement between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) – the body that organized ISL between 2014 and 2025 – expired on December 8 and the 2025-2026 season is yet to begin.
In September, the AIFF issued a tender for a new commercial partner, but found no bidders. As a result, several clubs suspended first-team activities, with several players publicly pushing for the competition to start.
India is currently staring at the dystopian possibility that there will be no top-flight men’s football for the first time in almost three decades and there will be no more spots in Asia as clubs must play at least 27 matches per season to qualify.
