Canada made a golden opportunity to take a stranglehold in their group on Saturday in the Concacaf Gold Cup in Houston, to drop an extra lead and settle for a 1-1 draw against Curacao.
Almost four minutes after extra time with 1-0, the Canadians lost ownership in the midfield in the midst of sloppy game, and Joshua Zimmerman of Curacao collected the ball and found teammate Jeremy Antonisse who breaks off his left.
Antonisse made a long term to earn a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, twice Juked and then scored by the last man in defense for the equalizer.
Nathan Saliba had previously scored for Canada, in the ninth minute, the collection of a deflection of a free kick and burial a strike at the bottom left of the net.
Honduras reverses El Salvador
Romell Quioto scored in the 33rd minute and Dixon Ramirez Icerde the match with a second half of the stop-time goal when Honduras El Salvador beat 2-0 in Houston on Saturday evening.
In combination with Curacao’s 1-1 draw, the victory of Honduras has really held the Group B rankings with one more match left for the knockout phase.
Honduras improved to 1-1-0 and is a point behind Canada with three points. Curacao is two back with two draws and El Salvador (0-1-1) has one point. No team has achieved a place in the knockout round, because all four squadrons have a chance to end with at least four points.
Quioto opened the score on a handy give-and-go with Edwin Rodriguez. After he had passed the ball to Rodriguez from Net within midfield, Quioto sprinted to the net and split two defenders.
Rodriguez hit him in the pass with a pass and quioto buried the shot of just in the box. It was the first goal of the tournament team after taking a 0-6 defeated from Canada in the opener on Tuesday.
With El Salvador in an attempt to get the equal goal, Yustin Arboleda led a crossing attempt from the Honduras box and sent the ball to Ramirez.
He then sprinted over the field, passed goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez – who played in midfield – and easily scored in the empty net in the fifth minute of the stop time to put the game away.
Canada (1-0-1) still leads group B with four points after two games, with Honduras (1-1-0) in second place in group B with three points after a 2-0 win over El Salvador later on Saturday.
Curacao (0-0-2) has two points. Canada will be confronted on Tuesday with El Salvador (0-1-1, 1 point), while Curacao takes on Honduras.
