Copa Libertadores – title defender Botafogo, coached by son of Carlo Ancelotti, eliminated

Botafogo, the title defender Copa Libertadores champion coached by the son of Carlo Ancelotti, was eliminated on Thursday in the round of 16 by Ecuador’s Liga de Quito.

The Davide Ancelotti team won the first stage at home last week with 1-0, but lost 0-2 to the Ecuadorian club in the return bone. Liga de Quito takes on another Brazilian team, Sao Paulo FC, in the quarterfinals.

Gabriel Villamil scored in the seventh minute and Lisandro Alzugaray converted from the place in the 60th in Quito.

The 35-year-old Ancelotti came to the Brazilian club in July for his first experience as a full-time coach.

Last month, Ancelotti was contracted until 2026 after Botafogo owner John Textor Renato Paiva had dismissed after the round-16 elimination of the team at the World Cup club.

The Italian coach has worked with his father for more than ten years in various roles in Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid. He is also part of Ancelotti’s staff in the national team of Brazil.
