Cristiano Ronaldo had a forgettable performance in Dublin when he was sent off for throwing his elbow at Dara O’Shea during the 2026 World Cup qualifying match between Portugal and Ireland on Thursday.
It was his first red card in international senior football, after 225 appearances for Portugal.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had received twelve red cards in his career, the last of which was for Al Nassr against Al Hilal last year. Thursday’s suspension was his thirteenth, one marked by boos and cheers from thousands of Irish fans at the Aviva Stadium.
