Day 0: A Journey Acrrros New Zealand

This September, I will start my first walk; Traveling 1,888 miles (3,039 km) along the path of New Zealand.

TE AAROA covers the length of Aotearoa (New Zealand), and is known with love like the ta or the long road. The path (or ‘track’ as it is called here) crosses hills, mountains, rivers, farmland and coast through the North and South Islands.

As my start date approaches, I have been increasing my steps, going up many hills and marking my team.

While the proof and error, the testimonies of past hikers and the support of an active community certainly help; I will have lots to learn as I go.

So, like Do I get to this point? Why embark on Te Araroa?

There is a myriad of reasons, some of which can sound cliché …

  • I love traveling and I have always wanted to visit Aotearoa. The TA is a special introduction to this magical land of Kiwis, lord of the rings and the Maori. Along with his rich culture, flora and birds in abundance; The TA offers hikers the opportunity to row or bicycle sections in addition to walking.
  • For me, the moment could not be better. I am currently going through a significant transition from life; Give up the 9-5 routine, pack my life in my backpack and move to Aotearoa with a Christmas work visa.
  • In general, decreasing the speed to relax is not my strongest suit. However, I sleep better in my store away from hustle and bustle, and I can’t expect natural therapy without equal.
  • Of course, this list would not be complete without the usual challenge of demonstrating myself that I can do it.

I have always loved to spend time outside and wanted backpacks. However, being self -taught led me to commit every sin of backpack.

Yes, I am the person carrying a 7 lb tent, I did not know how to properly load a bag, or that soup cans, apples and peppers may not be the best food for a one -week backpack trip.

As you can imagine, it is difficult to enjoy a trip when you always need to sit on the floor to tie your package because it is too heavy to lift.

You can be thinking, how the hell will this girl get to the TA?

Sometimes I ask myself the same question. Fortunately, I have improved packaging, I left my heavy team and now I can lift my bag behind my back.

With all seriousness, a walk is rarely just a walk in the park. However, as Helen Keller said, «Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.»

While I still have a lot to learn and prepare before starting the long way, I could not be more excited about the adventure to come!
