Day 1 at the Tahoe Rim Trail: fall into shrubs upside down

  • Thousands walked: 3.9
  • Covered miles: 0-3.9
  • Remaining thousands: 171.1
  • The bushes fall into: 1

I woke up without feeling very good and as if I had a little fever. My throat was still rough and I generally felt tired, so it was really not a day when I wanted to do any activity and much less start my first walk where I had all my belongings.

When your food simply does not fit in the bear boat

Ben and I spent the morning trying to condense our food to fit into the bear boat and fail. We had a BV500 size container that suggested that it was destined to adapt to seven meals, but we couldn’t even fit in six. After losing several snacks, we arrived there and each had three breakfasts, lunches and dinner plus a variety of snacks. It was also clear that yesterday we had overstimated a lot in the supermarket, since much of the food would not come with us.

Then we packed our backpacks. I would not really recommend packing your bag for the first time the morning of the day you are starting to walk. This is because it was the first time I had an adequate idea of how much everything would weigh. In addition to my own items, I also carried our tent, a bath kit (leaf leaves, toilet paper and hand disinfectant), medical kit (plaster, remover, tweezers, pain medications, antihistamines) in exchange for Ben to wear the bear boat, stove and gas. Clearly, I had the best weight in terms of weight, but it was also much shorter, lighter and, in general, weaker!

Go up to the road and a Mexican shipping meal

Our friend, Kelly, returned just after the 1 PM and we left for Truckee, four hours by car. I spent most of them asleep, without feeling good and when we climbed in altitude, my head felt that I was in a bubble. There was a lot of traffic near Sacramento and IR was slow. He was also heating outside and the air conditioning in the car was fighting. I could not say if I was hot because it was hot in the car, or hot because it was not right or a mixture of both.

We stopped for a Mexican dinner in Truckee. I wasn’t so hungry, but I knew I should eat. I asked for the green chilli and achieved about two thirds. I also mixed with a lemsip (a hot paracetamol drink of the United Kingdom) hoping that it will help me through the beginning of the walk and make me feel a little better.

I changed in the car in my hiking attire of Sun Hoody and Skirt. Kelly took us to Brockway Summit Trailhead, our starting point for the TRT.

This section that we knew was a relatively dry section and would be around 11.4 miles before our first water stop near Gray Lake, so we made sure to have enough water to spend the night, helped without cooking and the first part of tomorrow.

First steps in the TRT

We set up for photos at first and felt strange to think that we would be walking through the TRT that would take us back to this same point about two weeks later. Kelly walked the first 1.5 miles of the TRT with us before returning to his car and then that was all. Now we were alone.

And we are on the path of Tahoe Rim

The first section of the path was through the forest. It was the night and it was pleasant and fresh and very soft under the feet. The path rose slowly and became a little more rocky before opening the excellent views of Lake Tahoe at sunset. We find a place with good views and install our store for the first night. Ben hid our bear boat away from the camp, making sure that it was not anywhere where he could shoot towards the lake.

This was the first time he had just found a place and configuration camp. All my previous camp experiences had been in the camps where a place or area was assigned. There was something strangely liberating to launch our store in an adequate place.

As we had eaten, and the sun was already putting, there was not much more to make the bar enjoy sunset and prepare for our first night on the path.

Now I had a slight cough and my head still felt that I was in a bubble, but in general I didn’t feel so bad. Perhaps it was the emotion of finally starting the path we had been talking about for more than seven months or perhaps it was the effect of the previous lemsip.

Cuclillas are a key skill through a trip.

Before going to bed, I went to a last trip in the bathroom in the dark with the head of my head. I put on squatting near some bushes, but once I finished, I lost my balance and knocked back in the bushes, panties (pants for any American) around my knees and legs in the air. Unable to get up, I had to shout Ben for help. However, he used the opportunity to take a picture before helping me take me! And that’s how day 1 ended.
