Day 6 – Wigwam – The Trek

August 20 – Trail of the blue mountainsNe oregon

Looking back in Monument Rock Wilderness.

Strawberry thoughts

I woke up thinking about my days crossing Strawberry Mountain’s desert and how incredibly beautiful are strawberries. Due to the conditions of the path, I could not completely appreciate its beauty at that time. I have back there in the past, a long time ago, but only in the main area of strawberry lake / strawberry mountain. It is a fairly large desert area and is worth exploring again in the future. Especially when I am not trying to make a mileage and I can enjoy it completely.

Today it was completely a road walk, so it was easy to navigate, except for the fact that it was largely uphill. I took my time going in the morning and said goodbye to the S FK Burnt river. Early in the afternoon, when I approached the crest, I looked and saw a cell tower in the middle of the forest. That is unexpected! I took advantage of it and made some calls while walking. There has been no cellular coverage for days, so it was good to catch up or at least leave some voice emails. I keep in touch with Mary in my Garmin Inreach Mini 2, which has been great. But it is still good to have a real cell signal.

Wigwam water

There is no water along this section once I left the S FK Burnt river, so I was definitely planning to stop at Wigwam Spring, on a small spur road. The road was very covered, full of my old friends: the trees below! And you know what? He felt very good after a long way to climb on low trees along this small stimulus. It would not last long, and the change in the movement felt very good on my knees, hips and backs. I filled enough for a dry camp that night and drank everything I wanted. I even took a short nap.

Without humanoids

I have not yet mentioned how few people I have seen on this walk so far.

Day 1 = 0.

Day 2 = enough, maybe 30, on that popular path of Strawberry Lake.

Day 3 = 0.

Day 4 = 3 (Jessie and Family)

Day 5 = 0

Day 6 = 2 people who passed and looked at me as if it were Sasquatch.

Ants and a bull

I found a good Spur path along the next crest and I settled for a good camp. The weather was excellent, I had a cell signal again, and there were many rounds of abandoned firewood cuts to use as tables and chairs. The only problem was ants. They climbed on everything I put in or near the ground. I became very happy to have a complete tent with me, I hate the things that drag me at night!

During the night I woke me a bull alce, no doubt preparing for the routine. At first I thought I was on the main road, and maybe I was, but apparently trampled closer and closer to my store. And his snorted and snorted became stronger and stronger while doing so. It was very tempting to make a noise to make sure I knew I was there, but I remained silent. Then I passed it and heard it gradually fade. And I fell asleep, excited by a refueling the next day.
