Day 72: Heat and a vortex path

  • Blackrock Hut (885.3) to Pinefield Hut (898)
  • 2549 feet rise, 2757 feet

Today I was hot. Very hot. Like 100 hot degrees. We start early, we take a vortex break on the afternoon and walk until night. When doing this, we packed on a 14 mile day.

Most hikers at the shelter last night planned to go to the same cabin. We were not sure that we could make the 14 -mile walk, so we had told people not to worry if we did not succeed.

Early in the morning

The day began with a Blackrock climb. The path was quite easy, bordering the side of the summit instead of passing over. I felt relieved not having to climb the rocks in the heat, since I did not feel like altering any of the snakes that supposed to be residents there.

It was hot, but due to 8:30 am, it was not too hot yet. In the glow of the summer sun, we still find out to climb and around the summit.

After advancing at the top, we went back and crossed the fall of rocks in the back of the summit. Some hikers came behind us and offered to let them go ahead, assuming that we would be slower with our age advantage of 30 years. In fact, we had to reduce speed for them. We didn’t care to take our time, especially after we moved in the shadow of the peak.

Friends of the Forest on the road

One of our forest companions today was a cotton tail from Appalachian (Dark sylvilagus). This sweet bunny was still in the middle of the path, avoiding our advance. I gently waters forward and the bunny left a couple of feet. I paused. The bunny went well. It was a confrontation. No one was going anywhere. After a photo shoot, the bunny finally jumped into the forest and walked.

We were also adorned by a red admiral who posed Vanessa Atalanta. Like the bunny, the butterfly sat in the middle of the path opening and closing its wings for a minute or two. Finally, he also went out to the forest.

We also saw a mosquito in a Coreopsis verticillata L., Threadleaf choreopsis, spiral ticket, spiritual choresis. The flower is something mundane, apart from its bright yellow color. However, the mosquito posing in him was remarkable.

Addressing our first path

We definitely decided to go to the camp store. It was so hot that we dreamed of submerging our heads in a cold drink refrigerator.

The time of noon passed and we continue. Ice promise sailed us at the Loft Mountain Camp store.

Once inside, we overcome the options. In addition to that, we were so hot that it didn’t seem like a favorable option. We walked through the store for 30 minutes, without insurance of what we wanted to buy.

We saw a beautiful banner on the wall. I wasn’t on sale.

Cavando

Adter wandering around the store with air conditioning, we cool enough to think. Finally we obtained a load of food in two visits different from the store. The breeze between the store and the bathrooms had long banks with plugs to recharge. Shortly after we arrived, other hikers entered, filling the banks while we all fooled drinks, accompanied food and loaded phones.

The historian packed in two sandwiches, three drinks, some fries and half manga of oreos. I started with a sandwich with a sandwich, some fried potatoes and sugar -free iced tea. I love ice cream, but I left it a few years ago because tea does not adapt well to my body. I watered it and advanced. I regretted it later in the day, but surely it was good.

Vortex

After an hour, our bellies were as full as the loaders. The heat was horrible and the company great. No one moved. The clock marked. The Hiatorano ate more. I drank more tea. No one moved.

At 3:30, with 6 miles for the end, we staggered in the heat. We argue whether or not we could do the remaining 6 miles. I commented how steep the path was. We walk. We stopped and looked at each other. It shouldn’t be so steep. We take the wrong secondary path to return to the path of the Apalaches. Bonus miles at the end of the day in heat.

Puaj. After studying the maps, we decided to return to our steps.

We did it

After correcting our mistake, we walk at a constant pace and finally we arrive at the Pinefield refuge. When we got there, our shelter colleagues cheered and changed things to make space for us.

For some unknown reason, none of us was very interested in dinner. Of course, not after eating so much for the second lunch.

Someone was giving an aluminum chicken package, someone else who didn’t want it. Hmm. The chicken salad sounded well.

I mixed the chicken package with dehydrated onions in the home and Marinara sauce. I was fair. A fresh protein and vegetable salad dinner. Eatted in the company of friends, it was a perfect summer dinner to end a hot hiking day.
