Day 75: Heat dome brakes

  • Hightower upper parking (908.8) to Bearfense Mountain Hut (919.1)
  • 2438 feet ascent of 1955 feet of descent

The heat dome is officially over. The difference in air temperature and humidity is deep. The last days, taking a breath was difficult. High moisture left us panting oxygen between H2O -loaded air.

We were horrible in chemistry, but did not lead a rocket scientist to understand that the hydrogen ratio (H) to oxygen (0) was out of place.

Early Shuttle

Wayne, our incredible transport driver said he was awake at 5 in the morning and that he would take us to the road as soon as we wanted. We decided 7 in the morning, only in case we wanted to sleep.

We got up early and ready at 6:30 am wayne also arrived early, so it was an involuntary meeting of minds.

We returned your free bottle of laundry soap without Scentfree and added to the Shuttle hiker box my 1/2 dust agitator.

Another quick beginning

After low temperatures in the 80s, the temperature of the mid -morning was refreshing. We crossed the mile and a half that we had jumped in just 25 minutes. If we had done it two days before, I hope it would have been two or three more times.

We were encouraged and happy. He felt a different life to heavy heavy work only 36 hours before.

First Moras

At 8:36 am, we find a mature wild blackberry patch for which Shennandoah are famous. They were so delicious.

Many paths of trails have berry flavor. Nothing compares with fresh and wild berries. Even our organic house of pale dehydrated berries compared.

We remember together the fun we had last summer of Huckleberry collection. Spider bars are for Glacier National Park what the blackberries are for Shennandoah. Tourists come to eat blueberry meals and choose some.

Last summer was a particularly good year for berries and tourists. Visitors make organized berries excursions where cubes are given and a brief lesson on berries. No one tells them that the big berries are found in the steep slopes on bushes that are accumulated snow tone. It adheres to the sides of the path where the bushes are short and tasty, but small berries.

The passersby notice us deeply in the bushes and turn their heads in modesty. Everyone assumes that we are in Cathole Patrol, not collecting berries.

Human hand with berries stained fingers showing Huckleberry in nature.

This summer, we enjoy our berries path, tourist style. We were focused on walking, not in the collection of berries. In addition, we worried not to eat too many berries and accidentally increase our Patrol Cathole.

More food

We take sandwiches. Acquired from vegetables, sour mass and pimento cheese. We buried them in our packages to keep them fresh. They were a great post berries.

For dinner, we ate apples. They were a crunchy and refreshing dinner after a long and still hot walk. Bringing them was worth the extra weight.

Bouncing in farms

The afternoon threatened thunder and literacy. We pay close attention to where the rumbles were issued. We did not want to be in open and rocky sections without coverage.

After a couple of hours of surveillance, along with temperatures in the 90s, we were worn out. The day was a rocking success, but I had time to rest and sleep.

Our speed gradually increased by «horse to the barn» syndrome. I went high and put on to clean an explosion of 2 feet high. My right foot was almost cleared the explosion, but not quite.

I found myself hanging a couple of feet on the ground, face down on an explosion, precariously balanced in my left hiking post, eyeball with a poisonous ivy patch.

Too much to hurry. It never works. We extracted successfully without involving Poisen’s ivy. We expected.

Loking on the plate

The fall was relatively inconsequential, but after getting stuck my fist and my walking post in my rib, I noticed. While we round the curve to the shelter, I saw the first of the summer eccanacia.

It is well known for its healing power. Tonight, his golden rays made me feel better just looking at him.

Wild Eccanacy Flowers.
