A brief summary of the day.
Because I did the previous 6 mile hike on Day Zero, I had a little playroom today with my mileage. At least I thought I would. Turns out Scurvy from POC Hostel had hiked part of this route yesterday and was being dropped off right in front of me, so we ended up walking together. I can’t say no to hiking with experienced hikers, and he didn’t mind me joining, so off we went. My initial planning was for this day to be less than 15 miles, but we were able to push it to 18 quite comfortably. There were a few moments where I experienced dizziness, but nothing that made it feel like the hike was over.
Now, blow by blow.
Monk kindly agreed to let me leave the hostel early this morning, so I returned to where I had left off and walked around at 7:00. The first 3 miles would be on foot and then the trail would head into the woods. About 2/10 of a mile into walking down the road, I realized I had left my trekking poles at the lodge. Luckily, Monk had a lot of running to do that morning, so when I approached him, he agreed to let me have them before I headed into the woods (I don’t usually use my trekking poles on road hikes, but I desperately need them on the trails). The weather seemed a little cooler than yesterday, and I was grateful for that. A few kilometers later I encountered scurvy. It was a good thing I ran into him that day because there was a long water carry ahead that I was not familiar with and with his help I was able to pack enough water to get through the waterless stretch. It was a mostly uneventful day, but it ended up being my second 15+ mile day in a row and I think my body was starting to get a little tired when we finally arrived at our campsite for the night, it was early enough that I could afford a nap before doing my evening chores. That night would mark my first camp on the trail. All the previous nights had been at the hostel. Fortunately, all my equipment seemed to be working as it was supposed to and I was able to set up my tent correctly, inflate my sleeping pad without any problems, and my sleeping bag deployed in time to fluff up before I had to crawl into bed. When the time was right, I made my dinner (a dehydrated meal from Mountain House), cleaned my cooking utensils, and prepared my food for the next day. I had already changed into my night clothes to get out of my sweaty clothes, so at that point I said good night to the scurvy start and retired to my tent.
Happy trails. . .
