Days 36-38 - Zeros in Lake Isabella

Zeros. I wasn’t sure how my body would not react not to raise a backpack in the morning and walk all day. But I was anxious to discover it.

As Becky later realized, Ridgecrest was quite out of the way of what we had been planning. It was worth leading the other two hikers to a hotel there, but it was definitely late at this time. So we found a McDonald’s for dinner that was still open and a «parking» house park on the fairgrounds. I managed to find the showers in the RV Park before collapsing in the dream.

My internal alarm was still at the hiker time, so I got up early and took grace for a short race before the day became intolerably hot. I also took advantage of the laundry facilities in the RV Park before making a more arranged effort to make errands and find a more pleasant place to spend a few days.

We arrive at the post office 10 minutes before they close to send my ice ax and a full bear boat to Kennedy Meadows. This would not have been needed with our original meeting plan at Kennedy Meadows. But I still didn’t get so far.

Then we went to the grocery store to be able to replenish food for the next section (the food on my bear was destined for the mountains). In the store, I could feel the total exhaustion in my body while supporting me on the shopping cart and dragging the halls.

And then something surprising happened, which requires a little background to understand. While sealed food before the trip, Becky had been writing messages, inspirators, song lyrics, random, in each package. Another friend saw a photo of the packages, he approached and commented that he now had the «Don’s Stop Me now» of Queen stayed in her head. As you can probably guess, «Don’t Stop me now» began to play on the store speakers and this tired hiker of sudden fairy Big Smile on his face and the energy to dance down the hall while pushing the car.

After the weekend, we had all this half of the camp for ourselves.

Instead of addressing Kennedy Meadows for a few days, instead we go to Lake Isabella and expect some cooling water.

Today, I really began to appreciate the «zero» value. I was no longer exhausted. I didn’t feel fresh, but with much more food and drink, I felt closer to normal.

Playing at Lake Isabella

I started working on a sewing project to attach more safely my Ursack/Bear I lasted to my backpack. We played in Lake with Grace, who loves playing in the water. We had tons of good food. And Becky brought small cakes from a favorite bakery at home to celebrate my next birthday. We practice the cleaning of backpacker in the cake plates (licking each chocolate bit).

At night, we went out to look at the stars and saw that the sparks/embers flew from the fire well of a nearby empty camp. After investigating, it was clear that people left this place earlier in the day, they really didn’t make any serious attempt to turn off their fire. There was still a great record there with flames. Given how strong the breeze/winds were and the dryness of the vegetation, this could easily have begun a rapid forest fire. I made sure it was cold.

Grace would play to search until he drowned. She has a life jacket to make sure no

Today was another day to relax next to the lake. Grace and I went to our short morning race and my legs were almost fresh enough to feel that I was really running. My weight had returned to the levels before the PCT, although that did not immediately turn off my «hunger for hunger». I managed to eat and drink a lot during the day.

I finished sewing the bag to hold my USack or bear in my backpack. It is much easier to use than the net bag he had previously built (which was always crooked around it).

I also transferred the equipment of my original package (with the hip strap that came off) to the replacement of the guarantee that Durston quickly sent to the Becky address (apart: Durston was great with the replacement!). In that process, I noticed a couple of changes in the package.

1. Use a different buckle for the hip strap. I suspect that I will find this an improvement. The old buckle often pushed against my normal belt buckle and disconnected.

2. The load lifters join the lowest shoulder straps. With the old package, I had accessories sewn in a couple of places, but the first was too high in the shoulder strap, in my non -expert analysis and 600 miles of use. I was ready to cut the stitches at the top fixing point. But I don’t need with the new package.
