Dear fellow «late bloomers» – The Trek


We will start with NOBO on May 5th. Which puts us in the bottom third of PCT NOBO hikers of 2026.

There are pros and cons to starting in March, April or May. Really at any time. A few would say the sweet spot is usually mid-April. Neither too much snow nor too hot, compared to other times. Perhaps also the possibility of avoiding the worst closures due to fire.

A late start in an unpredictable year

Heat and wildfires are the main concern for late starters. Well, snow too, but more in relation to what’s left. Yes even some.

But this year. Curse. Weather forecasts predict well below normal snow levels in several locations as early as January and February. We didn’t even make it to mid-March before several heat wave warnings appeared in California. Temperatures above 108°F. There are already hikers in several PCT Facebook groups trying to decide and debating whether it makes sense to bring ice axes and microspikes into the Sierras. In addition, scientists are raising public awareness about the very high probability of a Super El Niño, which is likely to begin in late March or mid-April. Which means even more extreme heat and dryness.

Our approach: strategy and preparation to overcome stress

Well, in all seriousness. At least for us, this makes us focus even more on being smart and strategic with nutrition and hydration throughout the hike, but especially in the desert.

In fact, we bought an additional CNOC Vector 3L, so that we can both carry up to 8 liters of water at a time if necessary. We have also been going through various scenarios in case water resources are scarce, the heat is unbearable some days, or symptoms of dehydration or heat exhaustion occur. Better to be prepared. Although we know we are both wise and hope we can handle whatever this year’s heat and dryness throws at us.

We are also mentally preparing ourselves, fully aware that it will be uncomfortable, that night walks will be a necessity, that we may have to carry more weight in water and nutrients like electrolytes and sugar. Lihat juga pshr. That the breaks are more than good, it is essential.

And then, of course, physically. We are trying to acclimatize our bodies and get used to strenuous exercise in intense heat. That’s why we hike and run during the warmest hours of the day. Daily. Also when we are tired, hungry, thirsty, in pain or simply don’t feel like doing it. It sure feels empowering. And it’s definitely a good physical and mental workout beforehand.

A note for colleagues who start late

Dear “late” colleagues,
This year it may seem scarier, more stressful, or even overwhelming to begin this great hiking adventure. But we have this! All of us!

With former hikers, trail angels, fellow hikers ahead of us and each other, we’re supposed to get through it together. Help each other, give and listen to advice, make smart decisions, take care of each other and always listen to that gut feeling that tells you not to skip the nearest water tank, not to try to walk between 1 and 3 pm even if you are running late, not to carry less food or water because it is too heavy, etc.

We can do this. Especially if we listen to reason within and around us. And most importantly: enjoy it! Even when you hate it! It’s all part of the journey and it will be AWESOME. 😉
