EITHERThe defenders of Utdoor hastened to celebrate this week when the Senate parliamentarian eliminated the proposal of Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) to force a massive sale of public lands, ruling that it was not related to the draft Budget Law in which it was included.
But while that decision marked a procedural victory, the broader struggle for public lands is not over. Lee immediately promised to try again, already mid -week he had already introduced a revised version of his mass sales plan.
The original proposal, presented in the Senate after a similar plan was eliminated from the version of the Chamber of Representatives of the Law of «a large draft large law», would have ordered the sale of between 2 and 3 million federal acres in the West. The public reaction was critical to stop him, a fact that many defense groups have celebrated correctly.
The Outdoor Recreation Defense Group in the open air emphasizes that unprecedented public participation levels have played a key role in eliminating plans by sale for the sales of the Chamber and Senate of the bill.
But the fight is far from finishing, and there is a risk that continuous efforts to defend public lands can lose steam after this provisional victory, just when the public needs to duplicate.
«Outdoor Alliance is concerned with losing impulse at this juncture, given how intense this process has been,» said Tania Lown-Hecht, Vice President of Communications of Outdoor Alliance. «Senator Lee may be counting on the idea that people will not pay attention after the previous debate or that people will not defend the recreation close to the house in the BLM lands in the same way that they would do it for the massive lands of forest service lands.»
What you need to know about the modified proposal
Lee’s revised proposal now requires the sale of between 612,500 and 1,2 million acres owned by the Land Administration Office (BLM), a reduction in reach of 2.2 million to 3.3 million acres of forest service and BLM lands that were initially ready for sale. Sales would also focus on land plots near urban areas and allocate any land sold for housing and infrastructure development.
«No one supports the sale of public lands that are environmentally sensitive or part of the national parks or important desert areas,» Senator John Curtis (R-UT) wrote in a statement that supports the sale of mass sale. “But it is a false narrative to say that we cannot return some federal lands that surround the areas developed to local and rural communities to ensure that they remain habitable.
However, outdoor recreation and conservation groups remain firmly opposite. «Outdoor Alliance’s opinion is that selling 3.3 million acres is not right, selling a million acres is not right, selling half a million acres is not right.
According to Outdoor Alliance, the lands now scheduled for a possible sale include important outdoor recreation resources. «Senator Lee will simply not take a no for response,» said CEO Adam Cramer. «This proposal puts BLM recreation close to the house at extreme risk.»
The parliamentarian’s decision was an important victory for public land defenders, but the fight is not over. With a new version of the proposal that is already at stake, the defenders say that now it is not time to step back.
