The young winger of Borussia Dortmund Julien Duranville must be operated on a shoulder injury that is picked up against Real Madrid during the Club World Cup, the club said on Thursday.
The 19-year-old from Belgium was injured on Saturday in the last phases of Dortmund’s 3-2 loss against Madrid in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Dortmund said the surgical decision was made after an investigation on Thursday and it is not yet possible to predict how long he will be gone.
Dortmund regards Duranville as one of the most promising young players, but his progress has repeatedly hit injury tires since he came to the club in 2023 as a 16-year-old.
Sports director Sebastian Kehl said that the injury was «all the more bitter» because of the work that Duranville and the club had done last season to improve his fitness. «Nevertheless, we remain positive and optimistic because Julien is an excellent talent,» he added.
The opening match of Dortmund of the new season is just over a month in the first round of the German cup on August 18.
