East Bengal registers its biggest win in IWL history, Lynda Kom hat-trick helps Sethu overcome Sribhumi challenge

East Bengal FC recorded its biggest ever win in the Indian Women’s League as it defeated Sesa Football Academy 9-0 at the Kalyani Stadium on Tuesday.

Fazila Ikwaput (9′, 22′, 25′, 72′) and Soumya Guguloth (6′, 54′, 86′) each scored a hat-trick, with the former scoring four. Sulanjana Raul (17′) and Resty Nanziri (40′) also contributed a goal each as newly promoted Sesa Football Academy succumbed to their heaviest ever defeat in the domestic competitions (IWL and IWL 2).

As a result, defending champions East Bengal moved to the second spot with a perfect record of nine points in three matches so far. The Moshal Girls have a match in hand on leader Nita Football Academy, who have 10 points. Sesa FA remained bottom without points in four games.

At the National Center of Excellence in Kolkata, an early strike from Pyari Xaxa (7′) proved decisive as Nita FA extended their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Garhwal United FC.

Nita FA has now won three and drawn one of its matches. Garhwal United, meanwhile, suffered its second consecutive defeat and is still on six points after four games.

Nita wasted little time in asserting her authority. Even before Garhwal could get into his defensive shape, the breakthrough came in the seventh minute. Neha showed excellent determination down the left flank, shaking off Alka Indwar’s challenge before delivering a teasing cross across goal. Pyari, completely unmarked in the penalty area, answered with a sharp first volley to leave nothing to chance.

They huffed and puffed, but Sethu FC’s girls eventually managed to stumble across the finish line, beating Sribhumi FC 4-2 in an earlier match in Kalyani.

Lynda Kom Serto (10′, 18′, 90+5′) scored a hat-trick for Sethu, while Abigail Antwi (46′) scored one. Karishma Purushottam Shirvoikar (50′, 87′) scored two for Sribhumi.
