Eastern Bengal congratulates former Mohun Bagan Coach Sanjoy Sen, Sangita and Vishnu on Foundation Day

Sanjoy Sen is a household name for the Mohun Bagan Faithful-Hij led the side to the first I-League title and the Federation Cup after eight years.

But on Friday, August 1, his coaching insight delivered him from the arch-rival East Bengal.

The 64-year-old received the PK Banerjee Memorial Award (Best Coach of the Year) through the red and gold brigade on his 106th Foundation Day in Kolkata.

«The club to which I have not even contributed one percent, that very team honored me with this price,» said an emotional Sanjoy.

Sanjoy has coached two of the three Kolkata giants, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan, but has so far not been involved in the East Bengal Setup. Last season he helped Bengalen to win the Santosh Trophy (Senior National Championships) after seven years.

«Eastern beams is the only club in the country that can do this. I have no words to express myself. If I get a chance, I will give my gratitude to pay back my thanks to the club,» Sanjoy added.

In the meantime, Sangita Basfore, who scored the winner against Thailand to seal the historic place of India in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the Pride of Bengal Award.

PV Vishnu, one of the best players in East Bengal last season – he had four goals and four assists in all competitions – won the Jibon Chakraborty Memorial Award for emerging player of the year.

East Bengal, the second most successful team in the Durand Cup, started the 2025 edition with a 5-0 win over South United. It is planned to play the I-League side Namdhari FC and the Indian Air Force Football team, on 6 and 10 August, respectively.

The winner of each group is eligible for the quarterfinals.
