At least 11 people were killed and 12 injured on Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a football field in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities said.
The attack took place in a neighborhood in the city of Salamanca, with a statement from the mayor’s office saying officials have launched an operation to find those responsible for the attack.
“The deaths of 11 people have been confirmed, 10 of whom died on the spot and another while receiving medical attention at a hospital,” the statement said.
“In addition, twelve people were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical attention,” it added.
Four bags of human remains were also found in the same city on Saturday evening.
Guanajuato is a thriving industrial center and home to several popular tourist destinations, but also remains the deadliest state in the country due to gang warfare, according to official homicide statistics.
Mexico, along with the United States and Canada, is one of the co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Matches will take place in three stadiums, in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium will host five World Cup matches, including the opener, while the other two stadiums will be allocated four matches of the tournament and two inter-confederation play-offs each.
