English midfielder Jordan Henderson leaves Ajax after he has asked to put an end to a contract

The midfielder of England, Jordan Henderson, left Ajax after the club agreed to end his contract in the Netherlands after a year and a half.

Henderson had to deal with his Ajax deal for a year, but the club said that it «collaborated with the player’s request to end the current employment contract.»

Henderson thanked the club and the people of Amsterdam, but did not indicate why he had asked to leave or what he intends to do. He indicated that death last week in a car accident of his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota had influenced how he communicated the decision.

«Because of the tragic events of last week, and the devastating loss of my former teammate Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, it is not feeling good at the moment to say or do this short explanation,» said Henderson in a club statement.

«However, I am completely aware that I owe this club, my teammates and the supporters a fuller and more person thanks.

Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 after a failed six months in Saudi Arabia with Al-Etifaq. The 35-year-old midfielder captain Ajax when it does not meet winning the Dutch League title this season after a late collapse saw the team overtaken by rival PSV Eindhoven.

Henderson played 84 times for England and this year returned to the national team team under the new coach Thomas Tuchel.
