Euro 2025: England not to take a knee in Italy semi -final about racist abuse

The English women’s football team will not take the knee on Tuesday in the semi -final of the Euro 2025 against Italy to support teammate Jess Carter, who has been the target of racist abuse online.

Defender Carter said she was the target of online racist abuse since Euro 2025 and announced on Sunday that she will leave social media for the duration of the tournament.

While the England women traditionally take a knee before matches – including the four games so far in Switzerland, as a symbolic gesture against racism – they will not do this on Tuesday.

«It is clear that we and football have to find a different way to tackle racism, we have been agreed as a team to stay before the kick -off on Tuesday,» they said in a statement.

«We are over with Jess and all Lionesses players and present who have suffered racism,» the team said. «Representing your country is the greatest honor. It is not correct that while we do that, some of us are treated differently, simply because of the color of our skin.»

UEFA’s European football board said: “Abuse and discrimination should never be tolerated, in football or society, personal or online.

«We are at Jess,» UEFA said in a statement.
