Donyell Malen scored twice for Aston Villa in a 2-1 win over Young Boys on Thursday in a Europa League match that was temporarily halted due to crowd problems, including the striker being hit by an object thrown from the stands.
Malen appeared to be hit by a plastic cup after his 27th-minute goal – leaving a small gash on his head – and Young Boys fans again pelted the Villa players with thrown objects after the Dutch forward doubled the lead in the 42nd. Some away fans then clashed with police, halting the match for about five minutes.
Young Boys captain Loris Bento pleaded with fans to calm down, and dozens of police officers were deployed to the away player in riot gear for the rest of the match, without further incident after half-time.
Villa are on a run of ten wins in twelve games in all competitions, following a run of five games without a win to start the Premier League season.
“I think we turned it around well and we have to keep this shape, stay humble and work hard,” Malen told TNT Sports, insisting he was “fine” after being hit by a plastic cup.

Milenkovic secured a second win in five European matches for Forest on the hour mark as Sean Dyche’s side climbed to 16th with eight points.
«It’s incredible. These nights at the City Ground in Europe are something we should cherish. They are just so special,» said Yates TNT Sports. “We knew if we performed the way we knew we could, we would get the result.”
