Everton hand Chelsea their first defeat in the Women’s Super League in 585 days

Chelsea’s reign of invincibility came to an end on Sunday when Everton were handed a 1-0 defeat in the Women’s Super League, ending a 34-match unbeaten run.

Chelsea had not tasted defeat in the league since May 2024, but saw their 585-day unbeaten streak broken by Japan’s Honoka Hayashi, who took advantage of Toni Payne’s cross to score the winner at the far post.

The defeat was the first WSL defeat since the closing stages of the 2023/24 season and marked the end of an era for Chelsea, who won the title last season without losing a game.

«I think today is a game where we have to prove ourselves against the champions. For us, we did that today,» Everton defender Ruby Mace told the BBC.

«I’m so proud of my team and so proud of Everton… Sweat, blood and tears today. I couldn’t be prouder of this team. We said at half-time: the only ones who will beat this team are the ones who put their bodies on the line.»

It was Everton’s second win of the season and moved up to ninth place, while it was Sonia Bompastor’s first WSL defeat as Chelsea coach after taking over from Emma Hayes last season.

The result also leaves Chelsea six points behind leader Manchester City after ten games.

City are on 27 points after beating Leicester City 3-0 with three late goals, including a double and an assist from Bunny Shaw.
