FIFA awards for the best goals won by Ovalle’s scorpion kick and Montiel’s bicycle kick

A scorpion kick from Lizbeth Ovalle, the most expensive player ever in women’s football, and Santiago Montiel’s long-range shot won FIFA’s awards for best goals last season on Tuesday.

Both had their backs to the net as they scored the winners. Fans voted for Ovalle and Montiel to receive the Marta Award and Puskas Award respectively.

Ovalle tapped the ball with her heels in a jump in the air, looking away from the goal, while playing for Tigres against Guadalajara in the Mexican league.

The women’s award is named after Brazil’s Marta, who is now Ovalle’s teammate at Orlando Pride. Marta won the award last year and also had a goal nominated by FIFA for this year’s edition.

Ovalle, also known as Jacquie, moved in August for a $1.5 million transfer fee for the women’s world record to join the Pride of Tigres.

Montiel scored for Independiente in a match in the Argentine Primera Division against Independiente Rivadavia. He jumped about 70 feet into the air and encountered a bouncing ball after a defender’s header from a corner.

FIFA will host its annual Best Awards at a private dinner in Doha on the sidelines of Paris Saint-Germain, who play Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup match on Wednesday.

The awards for best player and best coach in men’s and women’s football were presented later Tuesday.
