FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Boca Juniors, Auckland City Play to 1-1 draw after weather interruption


Auckland City and Boca Juniors played a 1-1 draw after the Club World Cup Group C match was stopped during the second half due to unfavorable weather conditions on Tuesday afternoon.

The heat index became 105 degrees in sweaty Nashville with heavy rain and thunderstorms that the area approached when the competition was paused.

The significance of the outcome of the match was damped not long after the delay when Benfica Bayern Munich was awarded 1-0 in Charlotte to catch up in group C. Boca (0-1-2, 2 points) finished third in group game, while Auckland City (0-2-1, 1 point) with a minus-16 ended the tournament.

Auckland City-Veteran defender Christian Gray tied the game after 1-all after the break and leaned in a header on a cross by Jerson Lagos. Gray, 28, free of traffic circled and connected to the ball near the center of the goal. He directed it beyond a diving attempt by goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin to the right corner on the 52nd minute.

Defender Lautaro di Lollo gave Boca the lead in the 26th minute and cashed in a header in the left post and in Auckland City goalkeeper Nathan Garrow for his own goal.

Di Lollo found an opening in traffic with a header from close by on a corner kick that jumps from the left behind and in a late-response Garrow, in the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Prior to the delay, sprinklers were activated on the field while the heat index spiked and reserves on both benches were looking for shelter.

Di Lollo said on Monday before the Boca Juniors match would take the mindset of winning and «Waiting for Bayern to do their thing» in the last game of the group round against Benfica. Bayern sealed a place in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Boca that followed a 10-0 thrashing by Auckland City.

Benfica and Boca played on June 16 to a 2-2 draw. Benfica eliminated Auckland from the battle in the knockout round on Friday in Orlando.
