FIFA World Cup warm-up: Spain passes Peru 3-1 as Pedri shines

Spain completed its World Cup preparations with a 3-1 win over Peru on Monday, delighting thousands of fans in Puebla and cementing its status as one of the favorites for the tournament starting later this week.

Mikel Oyarzabal needed just two minutes to give Spain the lead, firing into the net from the edge of the penalty area. The lead doubled after half an hour when Pedri tapped into an empty net after being picked out by Ferran Torres.

Spain struck again shortly after the restart. Yeremy Pino’s dangerous cross slipped through the grasp of Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and into the net, increasing the lead to three.

Peru pulled a goal back through Jairo Velez, whose low finish beat the Spanish defense, but it did little to change the outcome of a match that Spain controlled for a long time.

The atmosphere around the stadium reflected the growing excitement in the run-up to the World Cup. Spanish jerseys dominated the stands, while Barcelona shirts were also a common sight, highlighting the popularity of several players in Luis de la Fuente’s squad.

Although outnumbered, Peruvian supporters made themselves heard throughout the evening. Pedri, Rodri and Ferran Torres were among the crowd favorites as chants echoed through the venue and Mexican waves rolled through the stands.

The World Cup starts on Thursday.
