FIFAs Infantino offers support to female referee Garcia about death threats


FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed support for referee Katia Itzel Garcia and the Mexican football federation (FMF) after the officer revealed that she was subjected to online abuse after a competition cup match.

Garcia, who is advanced in other men’s matches, including Liga MX, the Gold Cup and the Olympic Games, reported to receive the death threats on Thursday after the refugeing of the Leagues Cup collision between FC Cincinnati and Monterrey.

Her decision to grant a goal on the MLS side that seemed to be offside to the offside among Monterrey fans after Cincinnati won 3-2.

«I am relieved and saddened by the threats against referee Katia Itzel after her performance in the first round of the Leagues Cup between Monterrey and Cincinnati,» wrote Infantino on his Instagram Account on Monday.

«There is no place in football and society for abuse, discrimination and violence of any kind. At FIFA we are in solidarity with the FMF and Concacaf to condemn the actions of those who make these unacceptable threats. We offer our unconditional support in keeping those responsible for account,» he added.

The FMF said in a statement on Saturday that «Garcia will advise and accompany in the complaints process for the accompanying authorities».
