There was something about today. On paper it seemed fine. Sixteen miles of easy hills. Actually, yes, it was sixteen miles of easy hills. And the first eight to Icewater Spring shelter went well. However, the next eight seemed to last forever. Perhaps this is the backlash from yesterday’s effort.
The only longer view I caught
Maybe it was the weather. I imagine the views on these ten miles are incredible, but I have to imagine. With only a couple of exceptions, my views were a wall of clouds. Today we were hit with a fine misty rain. Rainy and cold enough to merit a waterproof jacket and warm enough to sweat in.
Whatever the reason, the 8 miles from Icewater Springs to Peck’s Corner seemed to go on forever. I held on to my fig bar and promised myself that if I made it to 3pm without a break, I could eat it first. Mission accomplished.
Some botanical gardens have to work hard for this type of path.
The kilometers were slow and hard, but beautiful. The forest around me radiates a vibrant green. The mountains in this section are covered with moss, lichens, ferns, etc. If you leave your backpack here for too long, it may grow.
Moss, ferns, both? I don’t know
And I came to Peck’s Corner. On one hand, there is a kilometer and a half of descent along the trail. On the other hand, the water source was the best so far. Plus, only four people showed up, so we weren’t packed like sardines.
