Former Real Madrid and Portugal manager Queiroz appointed Oman -Coach for World Cup qualifications


Oman hired Carlos Queiroz as his national team coach on Tuesday prior to the fourth round of qualifications that will determine whether the country is going to the World Cup for the first time.

The Veteran Portuguese tactician led Iran to the World Cups 2014 and 2018 and will take over with immediate effect.

Oman and five other countries – Saudi -Arabia, Iraq, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar – have reached the fourth qualifying round.

From groups of three, the two winners are eligible for the World Cup 2026 next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The trekking of the fourth round is on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The competitions are in October. After that there is an extra round-the second place finishers in November for a place in a Playoff tournament.

«This is part of efforts to improve the performance of the team for upcoming competitions,» said the Oman Football Association in a statement.

Queiroz replaces Rashid Jaber, who led Oman to a fourth place in the third round to keep the qualifying hopes alive.

The 72-year-old Queiroz also coached Real Madrid, Portugal, Egypt, Colombia and Qatar.

Queiroz was fired as a Qatar coach in December 2023 after 11 games.
