Gear!!?? – The walk

I make decisions at a very fast pace. I’ve always done it. You need a new truck. Check. New equipment to start a new hobby. Check. Buy from a backpack what I need to live for 6 months so I can make the right decisions and have a greater chance of success. Uhm, 12 months and still counting. I picked out my backpack at REI over a year ago. My wife bought it for me for Christmas last year. Green just as I wanted. And it was on sale! Everything else seems to be up in the air.

Null output

I went to Woods Hole weekend in August. I had a great time and learned so much that my brain felt bloated by the end of the three days. We were able to talk to previous hikers and they encouraged us to ask as many questions as we could. What an opportunity! I came home and decided that several team decisions I had made needed to be changed. What I know for sure is that I can’t sleep and I can’t stay warm. I have very little chance of success. I know that having special equipment will not automatically guarantee success in this endeavor. I’m not a gram counter. I’m a bigger guy, I can carry some weight. But if I make good decisions now, hopefully I’ll spend less because I won’t be satisfied with the equipment later.

Nothing new for anyone who has walked.

I think we’ve all had some questions about larger purchases. When you’re deciding on your bed, your home, and your limited clothing for the next half year, can you be too careful? Countdown is going to have you making some important decisions quickly. None of us have an unlimited budget, but even if I believe that some of these decisions should not be skimped on, there’s no way to know that they will serve me well for the entire time I’m there. So I guess that leaves me with this thought. Try to make informed, well-considered decisions and hopefully I won’t have to send everything I started home in a box!
