Gravenberch and Wirtz strike as Liverpool move into fourth place with a nail-biting win over Wolves

Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Saturday, moving into the top four of the table and condemning Wolves to an unwanted record for the longest winless start in Premier League history at 18 games.

Relentless strikes from Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz, a minute apart in the first half, secured victory for the holders, leaving IT on 32 points after 18 games as Wolves’ nightmare season continued with just two points won.

Wolves did well to frustrate Anfield fans before Gravenberch finally struck in the 41st minute. ‍Jeremie Frimpong got behind the Wolves defense before hitting it back to the Dutch midfielder who fired into the bottom corner.

Wirtz scored his first goal in Liverpool colors a minute later, latching onto Hugo Ekitike’s through ball before poking it past goalkeeper Jose Sa. Wolves pulled one back in the 51st when Tolu Arokodare’s header was saved by Alisson Becker, but Santiago Bueno was there to finish the rebound.

Liverpool’s form has improved of late and Wirtz is starting to show flashes of the brilliance that tempted Liverpool to pay Bayer Leverkusen £100 million ($135 million) for the Germany international.

The 22-year-old registered his first Premier League assist for a goal at Liverpool’s expense last weekend as Alexander Isak suffered a broken leg while opening the scoring against Tottenham Hotspur.

Being stripped of the most expensive player in English football history in the coming months will increase the pressure on Wirtz to deliver on his high price tag.

LIV vs WOLJUST AS IT HAPPENED

Two of Diogo Jota’s children were mascots at Anfield as Liverpool and Wolves paid tribute to their former striker.

Jota, who died in a car crash in July, joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020.

In the first meeting between the sides since his death, both groups of fans paid their respects, including a chant in Jota’s name in the 20th minute.
