Guardiola dismisses Manchester City’s exit talks ahead of the West Ham game

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola dismissed speculation over his future at the club and insisted contract talks are not on the agenda despite rumors he could leave at the end of the season. He added that his team was not yet good enough to win the title.

While Guardiola’s team, who host lowly West Ham United on Saturday, could overtake Arsenal for top spot in the Premier League this weekend, the Spaniard’s status was the hot topic at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

«I am always asked this question, so sooner or later I will leave Manchester City,» Guardiola told reporters.

«I still have 18 months left, so I’m so happy with the development of the team. That question comes up every season. Whatever will happen, it will happen.»

«These are not discussions. End of the topic. I will not stay here forever. What will happen will happen. The club must be prepared, but that topic is not on the table now.»

Enzo Maresca is reportedly a potential successor, although the Chelsea manager sacked them earlier on Friday.

When asked again whether he will play for City next season, an irritated Guardiola said: «I’ve already answered that question two questions before. I’m here. What’s going to happen, who knows?»

«Even if I have a ten-year or six-month contract, football changes a lot. Now I concentrate on West Ham and then golf after a few days with my father and that’s it.»

While second-placed City are just two points behind leaders Arsenal, Guardiola does not believe his team are yet at the level needed to win the league title.

«We have achieved results, but there are many things we need to do better. It helps because the mentality and dedication are incredible,» he said. “We are not at the level necessary to win the title.”
