TO A hiker died while traveling on a remote section of the Pacific Crest Trail near Anza in Riverside County, California, according to authorities.
Emergency crews were dispatched around noon Thursday after receiving a report of a hiker who suffered a medical emergency in a rural area within Section B of the Pacific Crest Trail in the San Bernardino National Forest. The incident occurred near Bear Track Court and Old Cattle Trail, near Coyote Canyon Road in unincorporated Anza.
Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department firefighters initially attempted to reach the individual on foot, but ground conditions prevented access. A command post was established near the trailhead and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department aviation unit was called in to assist with access to the remote location.
Officers and rescue personnel were eventually able to locate the hiker and provide him with medical assistance. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Riverside County authorities.
The sheriff’s aviation unit assisted with the recovery of the deceased in the remote area of the trail.
Authorities have not released the identity of the hiker or details about the nature of the medical emergency. The investigation is ongoing.
